IMAGINE HAVING AN EMPLOYEE WHO…
- Is always on time
- Doesn’t gossip
- Follows your exact orders
- Never lies
- Doesn’t steal (not even a pen)
- Pays attention to detail
- Is persistent
- Is dependable and rarely absent
- Is loyal to the company
- Is dedicated to getting the job done
- Enjoys repetitive activities
- AND … is grateful to have the job!
These are traits that a typical person with autism exhibits.
In a study performed by UNH (University of New Hampshire), people with autism were found to be “conscientious, very organized and to produce more in a day than most employees do in a week.”
As the organization so aptly put it, “What employer would turn down the opportunity to hire employees like these?”
Sadly, most employers do. The employer is in no way to blame. They are following the training and model they’ve always used. They judge people by their interview skills and people with autism typically never make it past this stage.
It’s up to us to change this. We as a community are responsible to empower those with autism. Employers need assistance, education and support. Those with autism need support, training and on the job mentoring. This is our role but we need you to help us in our mission.
